![]() An original concept for The Clothing Cupboard and one of my strongest desires to start a pre-loved clothing market was to promote an ethical fashion choice. Our market revolves around the idea of Rejuvenate and Re-cycle. All clothing sold at our market is pre-loved or up-cycled materials that are crafted by clever local hands. We attempt to bring you fashion in it's rawest and most sustainable form. "The ‘greenest’ clothes are those that already exist in the world" - Jane Textile Beat The Fashion industry has really sped up. It has moved from the concept of creating items to express individuality, made from quality materials that literally last a life time (you know you can still buy your grandpa's coat in the op shop). To a one wear, so cheap it's considered disposable "Fast fashion" industry. In fact the fastest growing house hold waste in Australia is clothing, with us sending to the tip $500 Million worth of fashion clothing in 2013. I know it's a staggering figure but it's not just the amount we throw away that is the problem. It's how it is produced, what it is made of, the people behind the scenes that actually sew our clothing and the conditions they work in. There is a really unattractive and not at all glamorous side to that gorgeous outfit you're wearing. These facts are pretty hard dress up, and it was this staggering realisation of how ugly the clothing I was wearing really was on the inside that got me thinking.. how can I make a difference? How can we all make a difference? It seems like a pretty huge industry to take on. But the truth is it's entirely up to you what you wear! It's entirely up to you which brands you support! That's right there are some good guys out there investing in their workers rights and sustainable practices. But if you really want to know what the best things you can do to promote a little love for Mother Nature it is simple.. Wear the clothing you buy. I'm not talking about wearing it once and hanging it up in the back of your wardrobe, I'm talking WEAR IT you bought it because you loved it so wear it! Be an outfit repeater, stand by your gorgeous item you saved up for and bought, wear it everyday if you want to! When you stop wearing it or it no longer fits either you or your style.. then re-cycle it. You can sell it at your local pre-loved fashion market, hold a clothing swap night with your friends, up-cycle it into something new or donate it to an op shop - Don't bin it! Re-cycling or Up-cycling your clothing is the easiest and one of the most effective things you can do for our planet and buying Pre-loved clothing is even better! When you buy something pre-loved you are reducing the use of new materials which can result in the reduction of energy usage, air pollution, water pollution, exploitation, the mistreatment of animals and even green house emissions. Now if that was written on a packet you would buy it right?! "Up-cycled from curtains to a dress!" Well that's what we want to do. We want to provide you, the conscientious global citizen, a shopping experience with a renewed sense of simplicity, with the freedom to still express yourself through means of outerwear. We hope you treasure the chance to be unique in an environmentally friendly, social and fun way. - Georgia TCC xx ** Facts and figures found through Fashion Revolution, Textile Beat & The True Cost. There is just something so inspiring about markets and re-loving clothing. I love seeing the diversity of clothing when it is re-loved & peoples personalities spill out through their wardrobe. Previous Posts
